Muir’s second-half comeback came up just short Friday night as the Mustangs fell 21-18 on the road at Newbury Park. The Mustangs struck first with a rushing touchdown, but a missed extra point left them ahead 6-0.

Newbury Park responded with two passing touchdowns to take a 14-6 lead into halftime. Muir came out fighting after the break. A third-quarter touchdown pass pulled the Mustangs within 14-12, though the ensuing two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful. After Newbury Park extended its lead to 21-12 in the fourth quarter, Muir answered with another touchdown pass to make it a three-point game. T

The extra-point attempt was missed, leaving the Mustangs behind 21-18. Muir received one final opportunity to complete the comeback but turned the ball over on downs near midfield during the closing minute.

The Mustangs fall to 2-3 and continue their season-long road tour next Friday, Sept. 25, when they head to the South Bay to face Redondo Union in another nonconference matchup. With Muir unable to host any home games this season because of ongoing construction, the road remains home for the Mustangs. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
